Who are the Governors?

Governors are volunteers who work in partnership with their school headteacher to ensure that children receive the best education possible. Governors represent the largest volunteer group in the UK and are selected from a variety of backgrounds to reflect the many interest groups within our schools.

The Governing Body has the following core strategic functions: 

Every school has a Governing Body, which sets the strategic framework for the school in partnership with the Headteacher.  The governing body should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

Establishing the strategic direction, by:

• Setting the vision, values, and objectives for the school
• Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
• Meeting statutory duties

Ensuring accountability, by:

• Appointing the Headteacher
• Monitoring progress towards targets
• Performance managing the headteacher
• Engaging with stakeholders
• Contributing to school self-evaluation

Ensuring financial probity, by:

• Setting the budget
• Monitoring spending against the budget
• Ensuring value for money is obtained
• Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed

The Governing Body works with the Headteacher who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school, including the management of the staff.

Governors work with the Headteacher to:

• decide staffing levels
• encourage good relations with parents and the local community
• decide how the school should spend its budget
• maintain and improve the school buildings
• make sure the national curriculum is provided
• decide certain school policies e.g. School Discipline Policy
• ensure higher standards and schools progress

Our role as governors is to support our school, acting as 'ambassadors', mediators and 'critical friends'.
